Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Typically items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, while items with strong bases such as eth titans aren't affected significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system is different from previous versions in some fundamental ways. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a specific number of times before they're "leveled out." The cost of upgrading is increased with each level, but the required materials don't increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of those items, rather than dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

If an item is finished being leveled, it will be capable of receiving a new set of upgrade components, and an increase in the likelihood that the upgrade will succeed.
