Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They give you an attribute bonus or additional effect, when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, retrieved as loot by enemies, or received from chests or missions. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. There are three types: universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, are able to be placed on any type of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that are subject to a type limitation. Infusions are jewels that are only available in equipment that is legendary or ascended. They provide the same benefits as jewels, however they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades, which can be placed in gathering tools, will include their name at the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding the word Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

Leveling

The cost of upgrading increases with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a handful of key items and maximize their impact, instead of spreading the upgrade costs across multiple items.
When an item is finished being leveled in this way, it is able to receive an upgrade set of components, as well as an increase in the likelihood that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is called the Artisan's Energy. It will reset to 0 if an upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
Once a piece of gear is upgraded to its maximum level it is able to be given affixes that increase its features. The number of affixes available is determined by the item's kind. This method makes sure that buildings are built to a high standard of safety and accuracy.

Recyclable items come with a gauge that shows the degree of upgrade. The cost and rarity of upgrading an item determines the amount of level that has been filled.
In the past, some upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you'd receive the stats most important to your build more often than other items. These included things such as the armor's total armor, thorns and duration reduction stats that are controlled or the weapon's bonus attack speed and critical strike chance.
This has changed since the last patch. Priority affixes have been removed, and all upgrades have the same chance of rolling each statistic. This could be a positive or a bad thing, depending on your needs and requirements from your equipment.
Each upgraded item could be equipped with a special fixed-value bonus that boosts its power by a certain percentage. These bonuses are added to the standard affixes. The more you upgrade a product, the better your chances of receiving an exclusive bonus.
