They are purchased by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. button, which will display a preview of the item when it is upgraded when the player has enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the item slot and the current level of the item upgrader kit, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for instance. This change is intended to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the top-quality equipment you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is particularly relevant for items like rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The account-wide discount will only be applicable if all slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
