Components

Upgrade components are items that can be put into armor, weapons and trinkets to give a stat bonus or extra effect when they're used. They can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors trading or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can only be used on equipment that has a slot. The item must be upgraded to a blue level before the component can be used. Upgrade components, unlike other modifications, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a special type of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the items that are not ascending back. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix may be added to an upgrade, which alters the name of the item it's used on (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, allowing players create stronger versions of that equipment that require fewer Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same level of upgrade item using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanic. They can be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear or by purchasing them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals each.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher tier version of an item will be revealed during the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to keep improving their equipment even if they're not sure of how much it will increase after a future reset.

The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process could be costly, and there is a significant chance that the item could become obsolete or even break when it fails. A failed upgrade will destroy the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the chance of failure. Certain upgrades also provide an additional bonus when reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade elements that can be inserted into special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs boost the power of all nodes in the area around them, including pre-existing affixes on equipment. If the player has enough tokens, they can roll item upgrades. The item will be replaced by an entirely new item that has a base of level 1 and completely different bonuses. This can be beneficial, but shouldn't be done often as it can be a waste of resources.

Failures can result in the item returning to its initial state and the player having to spend additional items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum amount.

If an item is not upgraded the experience bar in its growth bar will be reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it gained, such as chances to be crit, attack damage, or other effects (such as a higher healing rate over time, or the speed of reloading). The player is able to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to the highest. This means that if a weapon gains a crit chance increase, the increase will be applied prior to any attack damage increases. Slots is a brand new attribute that was added to item definitions. The value is recalculated every time an upgrade occurs.

The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on its rarity rating and upgrade slot count. The cost of upgrading equipment that is not premium is equal to its base value.
