Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. They also increase bonuses, such as crit chance and PvE damage.

Components
Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons and armor in order to provide them with a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors or trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades have special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can only be applied to devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before a component can be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied only once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and Enrichments are a type of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and ascending equipment, as other items that are not ascended. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.
A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's used on (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' is changed to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, allowing players create stronger versions with less Upgrade crystals than they would require to reach the same level using normal methods.
A 'boost' upgrade can change the attack or defense attributes of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades can be crafted from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanic.
