Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

amazon bedside cot cots, also referred to as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their children at night, without the risk of SIDS. They are recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby is ready to move to the crib.

Mehack is an MFM home tester, was awed by the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be used throughout the home. It also has a manual rocking feature. It was simple to put together, and even came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots and cots differ in terms of size, with cots being smaller than cot beds. They also often convert into toddler beds, whereas they are typically used up to three years old. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard that can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. The larger of the two is a good choice for children who want to sleep in it until they are approximately three.

MFM mother home test Jasmine loved that the Bedside Co Sleeper Cot cot was slightly bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for her baby's room. She says it's easy to carry her child in and out for night feeding or soothing and that the quality is excellent, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.

Another home test subject, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product it's a drop-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also comes with a reflux incline and a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike other international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy a new mattress every time your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Here is the ideal mattress for your cot.

Height

When choosing a bedside cot choose one that can be raised up to a height that is comfortable for you when feeding baby. It should also be able to be lower to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your baby towards you to feed them at night or to soothe him. This is particularly useful in the event of recovering from a C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot. While some mums find it easier to lift their children out of the standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, others prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular option and one of our mum testers stating that it has an easy-to-use collapsible side that is easy to press down at the touch of one button.

Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeper should only be used until your baby can hold their head up unaided generally approximately 6 months. This is due to the risk of suffocation. It is also important to be aware that when your child is old enough to turn the bedside crib travel sleeper into a cot, they will have to take the sides off as soon as they are ready to do this. This will stop them from getting out or falling out of the bed.

Design

There are many styles of cribs that are bedside, ranging from basic to lavish. Some of the more expensive options come with features such as an integrated light, a soothing center that plays music and sound and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep or the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child in order to feed them. You may also find some models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) ideal for when your child is ready to transition to their own bigger bed.

For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category, has a swivelling base that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get out of bed. This is ideal for new mothers recovering from Caesareans, or those who need to remain in bed for extended periods. Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, said it was easy to operate and made it easier for her to reach her baby - especially after the C-section.

Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which has won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It also comes with a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's larger than other cribs we tested, but it folds into its travel bag to make it relatively compact when it's not in use.

MFM mom home test Leya also appreciated the function of this crib for bed, explaining how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It is a fantastic design that is extremely easy to manoeuvre and it is super-sturdy. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing because it allows you to move the bassinet side to side and one of its sides can be let down to ease access especially for new mothers who are recovering from c-sections,' she said.

Safety

A large 4-in-1 bedside crib cot's main safety characteristic is that it can be easily raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed or comfort him or his or her nappies. This makes it ideal for new mothers recovering from the C-section. Find a model that allows you to lower one side at the push of a button, so you can effortlessly lift your baby without getting out of bed. This is important, especially as your baby grows and becomes more mobile. It is also important to be careful not to add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, including pillows and duvets. These could cause babies to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product issues like gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to other modes, such as play yards or bassinets. Several commenters suggested the CPSC include a different clause to the proposed rule for bedside crib with wheels sleepers that are multi-use that would allow them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that can be removed. Attachments can be permanently fixed or removed when the product is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is examining these comments and others received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will be examining these comments when it decides on the final rule which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
