Upvc Replacement Door Handles: The Good The Bad And The Ugly
UPVC Replacement Door Handles
The handles on your doors wear out over time and will need to be replaced. It is essential to be able to match the dimensions of the handles that were previously used when replacing them.
The three measurements to be inspected are the top screw position, lever and key hole sizes. Use the size guide to help you.
Inline Lever/Lever
A lever/lever handle is a contemporary door handle designed to suit new or replacement doors. This type door handle is offered in a variety of styles and finishes. This handle is offered by several manufacturers including Avocet ERA Fullex Hoppe Mila Millenco Yale.
Fab and Fix Windsor Inline Sprung Lever Door Handle
The door handles made of uPVC/Composite are constructed of durable materials and are suitable for multi point lock doors that require a strong design. The handles are inline and they use the same spindle and screws to fix them. They can be easily mounted on new or existing uPVC/Composite doors.
The sprung lever design allows the handle to be set and angled for comfortable operation and is suitable for all users. The handle has been tested to 200 000 cycles. This helps to ensure that the finish is of high quality and performance will last for a long time. The lever that is sprung can be shortened to fit a wider range of locks. This is particularly useful for doors with narrower openings where the cylinder is further away from the door. A shorter lever is a good choice for doors where the latch can be operated by a thumb turn located on the inside.
Lever Pad
A Lever Pad door handle made of upvc operates differently to the lever type handles on doors. These handle types of window handles are either operated by one spindle, or two spindles, either inline or offset. They are generally employed on UPVC double-glazed doors and come in many variations & styles.
The handles are available in a variety of finishes including White chrome and Gold. The finish is BS EN 1670 Grade 5 and is resistant to rust. This gives the handle a high performance and durability to serve its intended use.
All of the UPVC lever pad styles for handles are supplied with a spindle and screws that allow them to be put on any new or existing uPVC door. The backplate fixation centres of 211mm permit a larger handle, which is often beneficial when replacing a damaged or old multi-point door lock mechanism. These handle levers have springs, which can solve the problem of door handles that sag out of their horizontal position when they are not being used.
It is crucial to match the PZ dimensions for both the multipoint lock as well as the uPVC doors when selecting a replacement UPVC spindle and handle. This measurement is also called the "handle centre" or "cylinder centres which is a crucial aspect to match the appropriate handles.
Once you have the correct PZ size you will then be required to make sure that the handle lever pads and push pads are of a suitable shape to fit the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) approved handles you require for your doors. These are typically a square or round design with an internal lever and an external push pad.
The majority of UPVC lever pads we offer are sprung, which means that they return to their horizontal position when they are not in use, instead of hanging out and potentially sticking in the frame. This stops draughts and cold air from entering a home. The majority of UPVC lever pad style handles come in both left and right handed models that allow them to be put on either side of the doors.
Euro Cylinder
Cylinder locks are commonly found on uPVC doors, but they can also be used on other types of doors. They operate by using a key that unlock a cylinder case that is then revealed with pins that can be aligned with those in the lock body, allowing them to turn the cam, thereby opening the door. Euro cylinders can be fitted with up to six pins with internal and external doors usually requiring different levels of security.
Selecting the right cylinder for your needs is essential; it is contingent on how your doors and window handles for upvc are utilized. For instance, doors that are external should be fitted with a higher security cylinder, whilst internal doors can be secured using a standard cylinder. Additionally, certain cylinders come with additional features that increase security even more, like anti-drill and anti-bump characteristics.
To ensure that the euro cylinder is of the right size for your door, it should be measured accurately. The cylinder should be measured from the hole in the center of the fixing screw to the other end of the cylinder including the thumb turn if you have one. If you are unable measure it using the lock in its position, you can take it out of it. It is important to avoid having a extension of the cylinder beyond the handle or escutcheon. This can make it susceptible to lock snapping attacks.
Most newer cylinders have been designed with bump and anti-drill features included in their design. They are designed to minimize attack chances by forcing the cylinders to rotate in a new direction. This can to deflect attacks and ensure your door is secure.
There are cylinders that are constructed to resist snapping. This is a more frequent type of attack on cylinders, which is where the break line of the lock is smashed by a tool that is specially designed to break the front of the cylinder and allow the patio door handle replacement to be opened. This is a much faster and easier way to gain access than the use of a multipoint locking system. It also leaves less evidence of the break-in which could hinder insurance claims.
Spring Cassette
This spring cassette is found inside the base plate of the door handle. It is a spring-loaded solution to return the multipoint lock handles to their resting position after using. There was a time when these types of handle didn't have a spring built into them, and without it they tend to droop or drop when the locking mechanism is removed. This simple part is the best solution to address this issue. It also helps prevent your upvc door from becoming stuck in the open or closed position since they aren't easy to close manually.
These spring cassettes are specially designed for use with multipoint locks sprung They will not work with non-sprung multipoint handles. You must have a hole specifically cut in your backplate in order for them to fit (please see image for technical diagram). These cassettes are a solution to damaged or missing cassettes that are in the backplate of uPVC door handles. They are available as a single unit. They come with a square cut out that is able to accommodate an 8mm shaft.
These spring cassettes are an excellent value solution for the issue of door changing window handles that have become sagging. These spring cassettes are simple to install and will extend the lifespan of your uPVC door. Please contact our team for more information about our wide range of uPVC accessories and spares.
