How to Replace an audi a3 key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and readily available particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous issues in your car. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points.
